Nomination guidelines for division presidents

The EGU is a bottom-up organisation run by its members for the benefit of the geoscience community. There are many ways to get involved with EGU if you wish to do so. Being a division president provides an opportunity to help shape the future of the organisation and of your discipline. It is also an opportunity to give back to the community that you are a part of, and can, consequently, be extremely rewarding. Here we offer some guidance on the essential and desirable attributes of someone considering one of the elected posts within EGU.

The commitment

The role of division president is an important one (see By-laws §7). You will be responsible for coordinating and promoting the activities within your division, which includes reporting to council feedback from your community, organisation of the respective scientific programme for the General Assembly, EGU journals, division medals and outreach activities. You will need to be able to commit to attending Council meetings during the General Assembly in Vienna, a Programme Committee and Council meeting in February and an Autumn Council meeting held in October, usually near Munich, Germany. The meeting in February rotates location in Europe. These are typically two-day meetings. Committee meetings also take place during the General Assembly and, typically, before or after Council meetings at other times.

Attributes

Anyone nominated as a candidate for division president must be an existing EGU member (though complimentary members are not eligible) and have demonstrated previous experience of contributing to the running of EGU. This could be as a secretary or officer within a division or as a member of one of the eight committees that run the organisation. Experience as an editor of one of our journals and/or as a session convenor will also be useful for anyone considering standing for election. You will be representing your division and discipline within the organisation but also externally. You should, therefore, be well known to your community and someone who is respected and trusted by them. Above all, you should be someone that wants to support the aims and objectives of EGU and who has the time and energy to do so.
